Initial Diagnostic Result — 2026-08-09

Outcome

The diagnostic shows a workable foundation and good recovery behavior. Module 1 should run at the normal pace, accelerating file operations, links, and basic redirection while spending more time on exact text processing, permissions, archives, documentation search, and verification.

Result Tasks
Fully met 9
Partially met 4
Incomplete or not demonstrated 4
Blocked by secondary account state 2

This is a baseline, not an exam percentage.

Grading by part

Part A — Mostly complete

  • The first directory command placed reports and archive outside the intended parent. You noticed this from tree, removed the unintended objects, and rebuilt the hierarchy correctly.
  • The inventory contents, copy, rename, and empty flag were correct in the final state.
  • The transcript did not show the initial SSH connection to the primary system, so successful SSH access cannot yet be credited from this evidence alone.

Strength demonstrated: inspecting final state and correcting a path-construction mistake without assistance.

Part B — Correct outputs, with fragile matching/counting

  • The production and offline reports contained the expected records, but plain substring searches do not prove that the required field was matched exactly.
  • The online total was correct. Counting words worked only because each record happened to contain no whitespace; it would fail if a record contained spaces. The unit to count is records, meaning lines.
  • The first invalid-path attempt redirected standard output, while the error remained on the terminal. You recognized the issue and correctly redirected standard error on the second attempt.
  • Appending the login name was correct.
  • Using append redirection to generate the initial reports works once, but rerunning those commands duplicates data. Generated reports should begin from a known empty state.

Strength demonstrated: independent use of pipelines and successful correction of stdout-versus-stderr handling.

  • The symbolic link and hard link were created correctly. The hard-link count of two and the symbolic target support the result.
  • source/inventory.txt finished with the required mode.
  • reports did not meet the requirement. Its group had read permission but no execute/search permission, so group members could list names but could not traverse to the files. The extra SGID bit was not requested.
  • The uppercase S in drwxr-S--- is a useful diagnostic signal: SGID is set while group execute is not set.
  • Trying chown 0640 confused ownership with mode bits. Consulting the manual and switching to the correct permission tool was good recovery.

Part D — gzip creation complete; validation and bzip2 incomplete

  • archive/reports.tar.gz was created successfully after correcting the archive/source operand order.
  • Verbose names printed while creating an archive are not independent validation of the completed file. The task required a later non-extracting member listing.
  • The bzip2 attempts treated the compressor as if it could package a directory. Compression handles a data stream or file; an archiver first turns a directory hierarchy into an archive. tar can coordinate both operations.
  • The requested ls documentation result was not completed.

Part E — Deferred without penalty

  • The SCP syntax was appropriate and reached the SSH service on 10.11.11.47.
  • Host-key acceptance and an authentication prompt confirm network and SSH reachability; the failure occurred at authentication.
  • Because student does not exist on the secondary system, the transfer and remote verification were not possible. Do not create an account solely to repair this diagnostic. These objectives remain unassessed until the lab has a valid secondary login.
  • Ctrl-Z suspends an interactive SSH client rather than ending it. If that shell session still exists, inspect its jobs and make sure the stopped client is terminated cleanly.

Focused correction round

Do not rebuild the entire diagnostic and do not redo Part E. Correct only the items below on lab-cli-rhel-46.

  1. Recreate the three generated reports so rerunning the creation commands does not duplicate earlier content. Match the requested fields exactly, and count records rather than words.
  2. Correct the reports directory so owner, group, and other access precisely match the original requirement. Remove the unrequested special bit.
  3. Create the requested bzip2-compressed tar archive of source.
  4. Produce non-extracting member listings for both compressed tar archives.
  5. Complete reports/documentation.txt with the requested command, option, and local documentation source.
  6. Supply concise final verification for the corrected reports, directory mode, archive files, archive members, and documentation file.

Hints — stop as soon as you have enough

  1. Text reports: think about field boundaries and end-of-line boundaries, not merely whether a word appears somewhere. For the total, count output records/lines. Decide whether a generated file should be replaced or appended.
  2. Directory permissions: directory r, w, and x do different jobs. Group members need both the ability to read its names and traverse through it. Translate the requirement one class at a time before choosing a mode.
  3. bzip2 archive: use tar as the archiver and let it select bzip2 compression. In the tar manual, search for bzip2 or --bzip2. The overall shape is tar [create + bzip2 + archive-file options] ARCHIVE SOURCE.
  4. Validation: in the tar manual, find the operation that lists members instead of creating or extracting them. Apply it separately to each archive.
  5. Documentation task: open the ls manual and search within it for indicator or append indicator. Record the option you find rather than copying unrelated manual text.

Submit the commands and verification output for these six corrections. Full archive commands are intentionally withheld until after this retry.

Correction submission 1 — 2026-08-09

Accepted:

  • Successful remote login to 10.11.11.46 as student
  • Removal of the unrequested SGID bit
  • Final reports mode of 0750 (drwxr-x---)
  • Correct gzip creation of archive/reports.tar.gz
  • Correct bzip2 creation of archive/source.tar.bz2

Still required:

  1. Regenerate production, offline, and count reports using exact field/end boundaries, replacement rather than repeated appending, and a line/record count.
  2. List the members of both compressed archives without extracting them.
  3. Complete and display reports/documentation.txt.
  4. Show the corrected report contents and the two archive member listings as final evidence.

Permission clarification: 0750 is the correct requested mode. For a directory, read permits listing entry names, write controls creating/removing/renaming entries, and execute means search/traverse—entering the directory and reaching an entry by name. Every parent directory in the path must also grant traverse permission to a user who needs access.

Correction submission 2 — 2026-08-09

Accepted:

  • Exact final-field selection and line-based count produced the correct numeric result.
  • Both compressed archives were listed without extraction using the appropriate gzip and bzip2 handling.
  • The tar-tzvf mistake was correctly diagnosed as a missing separation between the command name and its options.
  • The accidental zv file was removed.

Prefer an explicit archive filename over *.gz or *.bz2 during an exam. The wildcard worked because only one file matched; with multiple matches, later names can be interpreted as archive members rather than separate archives.

Still required:

  1. Show the commands that recreate production.txt by an exact second-field match and offline.txt by an exact final-field match, replacing old generated content.
  2. Restore the original count.txt requirement: its first line is the number and its second line is the actual current login name, not the literal word whoami.
  3. Correct documentation.txt. -h changes displayed sizes to human-readable units; it does not append a type indicator to directory names. In man ls, search for indicator or append indicator, then record the command, the relevant option, and man ls as the source.
  4. Display the final contents of all three corrected report files and documentation.txt.

Correction submission 3 — 2026-08-09

Accepted:

  • count.txt now contains the required count and the actual login name.
  • ls -p / --indicator-style=slash is a valid answer for appending a slash indicator specifically to directory names.

Still required:

  1. Rebuild production and offline using exact boundaries and replacement redirection. Plain grep production matches the text anywhere, and >> can duplicate results on a rerun.
  2. Add the exact documentation source, man ls, to documentation.txt.
  3. Display production.txt, offline.txt, and documentation.txt.

Full-syntax help is now authorized after repeated attempts:

grep -E '^[^:]+:production:' source/inventory.txt > reports/production.txt
grep -E ':offline$' source/inventory.txt > reports/offline.txt

In the first expression, ^ anchors the start, [^:]+ consumes one or more non-colon characters in field one, and :production: therefore identifies the complete second field. In the second, $ anchors offline at the end of the record. The single > replaces each generated report instead of accumulating old results.

Diagnostic closed — 2026-08-09

Final production and offline contents were verified as correct. The documentation evidence identified ls -p / --indicator-style=slash and included the locally installed ls(1) manual content. The latter is accepted as source evidence, although recording the entire manual page was unnecessary; a concise Source: man ls line would have been preferable.

Final baseline:

  • 🟩 Can Perform Independently: 5 objectives
  • 🟦 Can Perform With Help: 5 objectives
  • 🟨 Learning: 0 objectives
  • ⬜ Not Started: 53 objectives

The diagnostic is complete. Regex, archives, permissions, documentation use, and command syntax will be retested without help before any of those blue ratings can become green.
